  • Proofing: Never approve a low-res PDF for a final run. Get a high-res, 1:1 scale proof, ideally on actual stock. The $50–80 cost is insurance.

Since implementing this checklist, we've caught 47 potential errors. The most recent was a forged carbon fiber page that had a color cast — we spotted it on the proof, sent it back, and the printer corrected it before going to press. Saved about $3,400 in wasted print runs.

But… the checklist isn't perfect

I won't pretend this solves everything. Some errors slip through: mismatched varnish finishes, wrong die-cut shapes, delivery delays. And not every printer offers physical proofs — some digital-only shops provide only screen proofs. In those cases, you need to build extra buffer time and order a small test batch before the full run.

Also, the print industry is evolving. In 2020, many printers offered free revisions. In 2025, most charge for multiple rounds. Budget accordingly.

Bottom line: If you're printing Kohler marketing materials — whether it's a farm sink catalog, a sink rack display card, a glass water bottle label, or a forged carbon fiber brochure — don't trust the screen. Trust the proof. And always, always have a checklist.

Because the cost of a mistake isn't just the reprint. It's the credibility. And that's harder to recover.
